In the common imagination, fillers and autoimmune rheumatic diseases should not meet. Yet, a study published in Dermatologic Surgery (January 2022) gathered patients’ voices, and the picture that emerges is more nuanced — and more reassuring — than one might think.

What the study investigated

Researchers administered a questionnaire to 194 patients seen in rheumatology outpatient clinics between 2016 and 2018.

They asked: “How do you feel about fillers? Have you had them? Would you do them again? With what effects?”

It emerged that those who had undergone the procedure were largely satisfied and reported minimal side effects. A significant portion wanted to try them; many, however, did not inform their rheumatologist.

The final message: from the patients’ perspective, fillers can be well tolerated in individuals with AIIRD, while still requiring caution and clinical dialogue.
